Nature for Kids
The Nature for Kids Program is a free monthly course spanning from September to March in which students from ages 5 – 11 learn about the environment, its components, how they work together, and how people, even kids like themselves, can make a difference. The students are separated into two groups by age, with the 5 – 8 group in the morning and the 9 – 11 group in the afternoon. Each 3 hour session will be comprised of a presentation about the topic that month and several hands-on activities to enhance their understanding of the material in the presentation. During this program, the students will study a wide range of topics, from abiotic factors, like water and sunlight, to plants and animals and even ways in which humans have impacted, positively and negatively, our planet. Every few months, the students will also be given an opportunity to expand their knowledge of the material covered during the session by attending field trips to places like nature reserves, zoos, and other presentations held at the Lake Region Audubon center. The program gives kids the opportunity to become passionate about their environment and have a good time, all while receiving a great preparation for future environmental science classes. The last session will be at the Lake Region Audubon’s Nature Faire in March, where the kids will be acting as junior educators at their own table with activities and information for other kids. At the end of the day, there will be an awards ceremony where the students will get to look back at their time in the program and receive a certificate of completion. The older kids will also be given a formal invitation to return as leaders in training.
The program is led by two high school juniors who are very involved in environmental projects in the area and love sharing their passion with others in the hopes that they grow up to become more environmentally conscious citizens.
